Manifesta is the only itinerant european biennial of contemporary art, together with events such as the biennial of Venice and the Documenta in Kassel, Manifesta is one of the foremost art events of Europe.
Each edition of Manifesta is organised by a permanent team of local and international producers and cultural specialists who merge into a single, efficient operative team. Manifesta is a community-based project: its success depends on the collaboration between international and local players and its involvement with local communities.
For the first time in the history of Manifesta, the biennial takes place in one single venue. For Manifesta 9 the large-scale industrial complex of the former coal mine Waterschei in Genk has been chosen. Taking into consideration the significance of the former Belgian coal mining region as a locus for discussing both the geographical and imaginary aspects of industrial capitalism as a global phenomenon, Manifesta 9 will develop as a unique dialogue between art, history and social reflection.

China's golden age will be an exhibition of exquisite pieces in a breathtaking sequel to our previous “Terracotta Army of Xi’an” exhibition.
The Tang Dynasty (618–907 CE) is famous for its fabulous riches. It is no coincidence that this important period in China’s history is referred to as the “Golden Age”. One of the important elements laying the foundation for this prosperity was the Silk Road, a network of trade routes that got its name from the trade in Chinese silk that began during the Han Dynasty. The Silk Road brought the Orient into contact with Western culture, and allowed good and lucrative trade relations to be developed.
